“Big day of negotiations with China. They want to make a deal, but do I? I meet with the vice premier tomorrow at The White House,” Trump tweeted Thursday morning, moments after Liu arrived at the headquarters of the Office of the United States Trade Representative for talks with USTR Robert Lighthizer and Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin.
China and the United States kicked off here on Thursday a new round of high-level consultations to address their differences on outstanding economic and trade issues.
The Chinese delegation is led by Vice Premier Liu, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chief of the Chinese side of the China-US comprehensive economic dialogue, and the US team is headed by US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.
The two teams had previously started working-level negotiations.
Liu met with the president of the US-China Business Council Craig Allen, executive vice-president and head of international Affairs, US Chamber of Commerce Myron Brilliant and the new IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva on Wednesday.
