KOTA KINABALU – Several lion dance performers had a narrow escape when they fell into a sinkhole while performing at a Chinese New Year celebration in Tamparuli town, 35km from here.
The incident occurred around 11am outside shops on Jalan Bunga, where the concrete pavement sank about a metre deep, startling spectators.
Three performers fell into the hole.
Their teammates swiftly rescued them. They were unhurt.
Rayner Ebi, 45, an officer at the Tuaran MP service centre, said the incident underscored the importance of regular infrastructure maintenance and prompt action when faults are detected.
He noted that concerns about the unstable corridor floor had been previously reported to the Tuaran District Council.
“However, accidents are unpredictable, and unfortunately, the collapse happened right during the lion dance performance,” he said.
Rayner called on the local authorities to take immediate action to ensure pedestrian safety.
He also advised the public to remain vigilant and cautious when passing through the affected area.
