Malaysia’s government looking at ways to expand subsidies: PM Anwar

PUTRAJAYA – The government is studying methods to expand targeted subsidies to benefit the people, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The Prime Minister said, on Thursday (April 13), that the Finance Ministry, the Economy Ministry and the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry were studying ways to do this, national news agency Bernama reported.

Ealier Thursday, Anwar chaired the first meeting of the National Action Council on Cost of Living (Naccol) for 2023 in Putrajaya.

In a Facebook post, Anwar said the meeting was also attended by the Deputy Prime Minister, Ministers and secretaries-general of the ministries involved.

“Today’s meeting has taken some important decisions regarding the cost of living taking into account the Madani aspect,” he said.

In his post, Anwar also said that four papers were presented at the Naccol meeting that examined issues and strategies focused on efforts towards strengthening the government-subsidy mechanism to tackle leakages as well as improving food supply capacity.
