DHAKA – The bodies of two Bangladeshi men were recovered from the banks of the Ichamati River in the Panch Bhulot border area of Jashore’s Sharsha upazila yesterday.
The deceased are Sabu Hossain, 28, of Dighirpar village under Benapole Port Police Station, and Jahangir Hossain, 33, of Dakshin Para in Kagojpukur village under the same police station.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sharsha Police Station, Amir Abbas, said the bodies were recovered from the Panch Bhulot border area and sent to Jashore General Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Police primarily believed the victims were tortured to death, as multiple injury marks were found on the bodies.
Lt Col Khurshid Anwar, commanding officer of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Battalion-21, also confirmed the recovery of the bodies on the riverbank.
He said the two were handed over to Sharsha Police Station and Benapole Port Police Station for further investigation and autopsy.
Locals alleged that the deceased had long been involved in smuggling goods from India into Bangladesh.
However, police and BGB officials have not yet confirmed these claims or determined who was responsible for the deaths.
