25 new radiation oncology machines being installed across Myanmar

To help reduce the waiting list for cancer radiation treatment as a priority, not only public hospitals but also five private hospitals have been granted permission to provide radiation treatment for cancer.

YANGON – According to the Ministry of Health, a total of 25 radiation cancer treatment machines (Linear Accelerator-LA) are being used nationwide, including the newly installed machines.

The radiation cancer treatment machines include three newly installed machines at the National Cancer Treatment Center in Dagon Myothit (Seakkan) Township, 14 cancer treatment machines at the Ministry of Health, 7 machines at private hospitals, and 4 machines at the Tatmadaw Hospital, for a total of 25 cancer treatment machines.

Union Minister for Health, Professor Dr. Thet Khaing Win, said, “With the (3) machines installed today, the Ministry of Health has installed a total of (14) radiation therapy machines for cancer treatment. (7) machines are being installed in private hospitals and (4) machines are being used in military hospitals, bringing the total number of machines nationwide to (25).”

The ceremony to launch the use of radiation therapy machines (Linear Accelerator-LA) was held on the morning of January 21 at the National Cancer Treatment Center on Bago Riverside Road, Ward 92, Dagon Myothit (Seakkan) Township.

To help reduce the waiting list for cancer radiation treatment as a priority, not only public hospitals but also five private hospitals have been granted permission to provide radiation treatment for cancer.

The five private hospitals are Gramhantha Hospital in Yangon, Moe Kaung Yadana Hospital, Panglong Hospital, and Mingalar Hospital in Mandalay.

These five private hospitals will start providing radiation treatment to patients selected by Yangon General Hospital and Mandalay General Hospital starting March 2024 in accordance with the Private Health Service Law.

The reinforcement has been carried out and now (224) patients have been treated.
