KUALA LUMPUR – About 34 percent of pig farms nationwide have switched to closed-house model under modernization plan, says Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu.

Of the 355 registered pig farms nationwide, 121 farms operate under the closed-house model and a zero-discharge concept.

The modern system aims to enhance biosecurity, manage livestock waste in a more systematic manner and reduce the risk of disease transmission, including African swine fever, he said.

In his written reply to Senator Tan Sri Low Kian Chuan, Mohamad said the government is mindful of the sensitivity surrounding pig farming issues and would exercise caution in all planning.

He said the government is conducting a comprehensive study on the pig farming industry to assess the entire supply chain, including legal, technical, economic and social aspects.

The findings will serve as a basis for improving policies and implementation mechanisms to ensure the industry develops in a planned and responsible manner, in line with the objective of safeguarding social harmony.

“All planning takes into account environmental sustainability, community well-being, public health and social harmony. The government will adopt a balanced and inclusive approach to safeguard the interests of all parties,” he said.

Low had asked how the federal government would collaborate with the Selangor state government to develop a centralized and environmentally sustainable modern pig farming system to ensure sufficient local pork supply in the Klang Valley and reduce reliance on imports.

Mohamad said the development of such a system must be carried out in a comprehensive and orderly manner, taking into account the respective jurisdictions of the federal and state governments.

That state governments have authority within their jurisdictions to regulate farming activities and manage land matters, he said.

In a separate written reply to Senator Datuk Vincent Wu, Mohamad said the system also supports more efficient and environmental- friendly farm management practices in line with sustainable development principles.

“The Agriculture and Food Security Ministry will continue to monitor the pig farming industry through the Veterinary Services Department and encourage operators to transition in stages based on their level of readiness and capacity,” he added.
