389 cable theft cases recorded in Brunei since 2019, losses exceed US$1.2mil

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN – A total of 389 cable theft incidents were recorded from December 2019 to January 15, 2026, resulting in losses amounting to BND1,640,211.22, according to Unified National Networks (UNN) during the second media engagement session yesterday.

Brunei-Muara District recorded the highest number with 315 incidents, followed by Tutong District with 49 cases. Belait District recorded 21 cases, while Temburong District accounted for four cases.

UNN Manager of Field Operations Haji Muhammad Nizam Haji Dollah said that cable theft remains a serious issue, occurring consistently from 2019 to January this year.

Cable theft has caused real-time service disruptions and resulted in losses amounting to BND1,640,211.22, mainly due to cable replacement and repair works, as well as manpower costs. Damaged network assets and cables also affect essential services in households, businesses, and public installations.
