DHAKA – The Durga Puja holidays are almost here, and like many others, you too are probably making travel plans. If you are tired of visiting popular tourist destinations and would like to step away from the usual tourist trail, here are five underrated destinations in Bangladesh worth considering for your Puja getaway.

Kangchenjunga View Point, Tetulia

Although far from the actual mountain range, at the northernmost tip of Bangladesh, in Tetulia, you can steal a glance at the third-highest mountain in the world, Mount Kangchenjunga of the Himalayas. The majestic view, however, depends vastly on the weather, and October to the middle of November is the best time to visit the place. Prepare for at least two days of the visit to increase your chances of getting a glimpse. Beyond the mountain view, Tetulia is also famed for its tea valleys, which are also well worth exploring.

Nijhum Dwip, Noakhali

Often termed as the “Sundarbans of Noakhali” by locals, this quiet island is home to a rich mangrove forest and herds of spotted deer. If you walk softly through the forest, you might catch sight of them in their natural habitat. Adventurers seeking an offbeat challenge will find Nijhum Dwip rewarding, with notable attractions such as the Nijhum Dwip National Park, Palkir Char, and Kamlar Dighi, offering both tranquillity and scenic beauty.

Birishiri, Durgapur, Mymensingh

This can serve as the perfect destination for hiking and sightseeing. You can travel to Netrokona either by bus or train; from there, you can hop on an auto-rickshaw to reach your desired destination. The greenery-coated “porcelain hills” will soothe your eyes, and a visit to the banks of the Someswari River is a must if you are visiting the place.

Modhutila and Ghajni, Sherpur

Consider staying here for at least two days to check the complete itinerary Sherpur has to offer. The Shapla Chattar may serve as the hub of all your commutes, as you can easily get autos from there to explore all the tourist spots. The Mayabi Lake area is recommended and is, of course, great for taking pictures. The Modhutila Eco-park is also a great place for excursions.

Kuakata, Patuakhali

Commonly known as ‘Shagor Konya’ (daughter of the sea) for its calm and tranquil natural environment, Kuakata can be a great place to visit. Most people consider winter the perfect season for visiting the place because of the ease of roaming around the beach and exploring all the activities. However, the winter fog can overshadow the spectacular sunset view. Gangamati Char, Kakra Beach, Kawar Char, Jhau Bon, and Buddha Mandir remain the most sought-after spots for strolling.
