6 children raped in 6 districts in Bangladesh

DHAKA – At least seven people landed in jail yesterday on charges of rape in six districts.

Of the victims, a six-year-old girl was raped by two teenaged boys in Habiganj’s Baniachong upazila on Sunday.

Quoting the victim’s family, police said the girl was playing at home on Sunday afternoon. Luring to give her chocolates, two neighbours took her to a nearby bush and raped her.

The two were arrested at night after the victim’s grandmother filed a case against the duo — one is 15-year-old and another is 17, said Prabash Kumar Singh, an additional superintendent of Habiganj police.

A local court sent the two to jail yesterday, he said.

Meanwhile, the victim’s maternal uncle told The Daily Star that her father had been suffering from various diseases for a long time.

Hearing about the incident, his condition deteriorated, and he died around 11:00am yesterday, the uncle added.

Police officer Prabash, who visited the victim’s house yesterday, also confirmed the news of the father’s death.

In Laxmipur’s Ramgati upazila, two men were sent to prison yesterday in a case filed over raping and provoking the victim to die by suicide.

The accused are Md Rakib, 24, and Md Helal Uddin, 27, residents of the same upazila.

Quoting the victim’s family, police said Md Rakib somehow entered the 16-year-old girl’s house late at night on March 1 and raped her.

Villagers held an arbitration on Thursday morning to settle the issue. But some people scolded the girl there. She died by suicide in the afternoon. Police later recovered the body, said Kabir Hossain, officer-in-charge of Ramgati Police Station.

A day later, the victim’s mother lodged a case against 12 people, including Rakib, under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.

A local court sent Rakib and Helal to jail, the OC added.

Helal and the 10 other suspects were sued for provocation.

In Sherpur, a youth landed in prison yesterday in a case filed over raping a 14-year-old girl in Nakla upazila.

Police said accused Sabbir Miah, 20, and the victim used to work at a brick kiln. Sabbir raped the girl on Saturday afternoon.

Sabbir was arrested on Sunday night after the victim’s mother lodged a case. He was produced before a local court that sent him to jail yesterday, said Habibur Rahman, OC of Nakla Police Station.

In another incident, a man landed in prison yesterday on charge of raping a three-year child in Noakhali’s Kabirhat upazila.

The accused is Md Nuruzzaman, of the same upazila.

Police said Nuruzzaman took the child to a toilet and raped him on Tuesday afternoon.

On information, police arrested Nuruzzaman yesterday. A local court sent him to prison, said Shaheen Miah, OC of Kabirhat Police Station.

In Kishoreganj, a man landed in jail yesterday on charge of raping a 14-year-old girl.

The accused, Tafazzal Deen Islam, 27, is a resident of Kishoreganj Sadar upazila.

Quoting locals, police said the victim came out of her room on Saturday night to use the toilet. Tafazzal, who was waiting there, forcibly took the girl to a nearby field and raped her.

Police arrested Tafazzal yesterday morning after her father lodged a case. A Kishoreganj court sent him to prison, said Abdullah Al Mamun, OC of Kishoreganj Sadar Model Police Station.

In another incident, a man was sent to jail yesterday on charges of raping a 10-year-old girl in the capital’s Baridhara area.

The accused is Sazal Hossain Palash, 40, said Moklesur Rahman, inspector (investigation) of Gulshan Police Station.

He raped the girl at her house on Sunday, said police.

The victim is now undergoing treatment at the one-stop crisis centre at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

In another development, a 55-year-old man landed in jail yesterday on charges of attempting to rape a second-grader girl in Feni’s Fulgazi upazila.

The accused, Nurul Islam, is a resident of the upazila, said police.
