HONG KONG – The Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon 2024, the biggest road running event in Hong Kong, will take place on Jan 21 with 74,000 participants, marking a return to pre-pandemic levels.

Registration for the various categories will be conducted online in stages starting from August 31, and the public ballot registration, including for the reintroduced 10-kilometer team race, will commence at 10 am on Sept 21.

The biennial Asian Marathon Championships will also be held on the same day, marking the fifth time the event has been held in Hong Kong and the first time after the COVID-19 pandemic

The marathon will once again feature the “Marathon Special Incentive Award”, offering HK$10,000 ($1,270) to male runners who finish the full marathon in under three hours, and female runners in under 3.5 hours, a significant increase from the previous HK$1,000 prize.

The event covers five categories: marathon, half-marathon, 10-kilometer race, 10-kilometer wheelchair race, and a wheelchair race experience (2.5 kilometers). The marathon and half-marathon will start from Nathan Road in Tsim Sha Tsui, while the 10-kilometer race will begin at the Island Eastern Corridor, and the wheelchair race will commence from Wan Chai Sports Ground. All races will finish at Victoria Park.

The biennial Asian Marathon Championships will also be held on the same day, marking the fifth time the event has been held in Hong Kong and the first time after the COVID-19 pandemic. Invitations have been extended to runners from about 45 Asian member countries and regions.

Mary Huen Wai-yi, executive director and cluster chief executive officer of Standard Chartered Bank Hong Kong and Regional Chief Executive (Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Macau), believes that the Hong Kong Marathon has always injected positive energy into society. She emphasized that the resumption of the Asian Marathon Championships after the pandemic reflects the international community’s recognition of Hong Kong and its status as the capital of major events in Asia.
