HANOI – Việt Nam’s best midfielder Nguyễn Hồng Sơn has decided to document the ups and downs of his footballing life in a memoir book entitled ‘Hồng Sơn ‘Princess’ — A Football Monster in a Soldier’s Jersey’.

The memoir runs to close to three hundred pages, divided into four parts, describing in detail Sơn’s unforgettable memories through more than 30 years throughout his childhood, his illustrious playing career and then retirement.

It was penned by journalists Bảo Thắng and Cường Vũ and jointly published by Lao Động Publishing House and THBooks.

The book includes four main parts: Childhood and Steps into Football, Years of Glory and Bitterness, Hồng Sơn and Family and Hồng Sơn in the Eyes of Friends, Colleagues and Fans.

It was one of activities to celebrate his 54th birthday anniversary on October 9.

“The memoir is all my football life, my love for football, my career, the challenges and injuries and achievement with the Bronze Ball and Golden Ball statues,” said Sơn who worked on the book for seven years.

He said he wanted to write the book to preserve his memories and tell fans about his life, but did not think it would create a buzz or become a bestseller.

Sơn is considered one of the most successful players in Vietnamese football.

He was a heroic player, a footballing icon and had a huge influence on many generations who love football and the national team of Việt Nam.

He was key player for Thể Công FC and Việt Nam, belonging to football’s ‘golden generation’ in the 1990s.

Currently he works as a coach for young footballers and has also appeared on several game shows including the Anh Trai Vượt Ngàn Chông Gai (Call Me by Fire).
