DHAKA – Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus said today that reports on violence against religious minorities were “completely exaggerated”.

In his speech to the nation, Yunus said, “When we took charge, Bangladesh was a completely defenseless country. At this time, there were attempts to spread unwarranted fear among religious minorities. In some cases, they became victims of violence. But the reports surrounding this was completely exaggerated. The little violence that occurred had political causes. But these events were given a religious cover to destabilise Bangladesh once again. With your cooperation, we have firmly handled this situation.”

“We are investigating every instance of violence against them since we took charge. Not only the Hindu community, but we have made every effort to ensure that no one in the country becomes a victim of violence, and we will continue to make these efforts,” he added.

He said, “Two months after we took charge, Durga Puja was celebrated in nearly 32,000 puja mandaps across the country. On the occasion of Durga Puja, an executive order declared an additional holiday, which enhanced the festive atmosphere. We took extensive security measures for Durga Puja, which allowed the Hindu community to celebrate their festival without any hindrance.”
