Philippine senatorial choices: Popularity over capability

It is increasingly apparent that celebrity culture is infiltrating governance, where legitimate lawmaking is overshadowed by the mere pursuit of votes founded upon name recognition and superficial charm.

MANILA – As we brace for the 2025 Philippine senatorial elections, a troubling trend reveals itself: a plethora of aspirants is gearing up to benefit from transient popularity rather than showcasing the essential capabilities demanded of lawmakers. It is increasingly apparent that celebrity culture is infiltrating governance, where legitimate lawmaking is overshadowed by the mere pursuit of votes founded upon name recognition and superficial charm.

What we are witnessing on the electoral landscape is a brand of politics that elevates showmanship over substance. Candidates who often lack the foundational knowledge necessary for the gravitas of senatorial roles pepper the electoral slate, their platforms mere echoes of sound bites and catchphrases. They occupy the public stage with slogans and exaggerated promises that draw attention but offer little in genuine legislative depth. In stark contrast, candidates with actual leadership qualities fall into the shadows, drowned out by the clamor of those whose fame outshines their qualifications.

In just four months, we will be tasked with selecting the future occupants of the new Senate Building—a structure that encapsulates both the controversies and expenses associated with our government’s budgeting choices. Initially projected at P8.9 billion in 2008, the cost ballooned to P23.5 billion by 2018 and now stands at an eye-watering P31.6 billion. With a per-square-meter price point of P240,000—far exceeding the Arcadis Philippines Inc. Construction Cost Handbook’s recommended figure of P183,000 for quality high-rise offices—it’s evident that fiscal responsibility has been cast aside.

The latest survey results reflect our harsh reality: we face an overwhelmingly crowded field where personal fame eclipses essential qualifications. In a nation where buzz and spectacle drive electoral choices, it becomes disheartening to see potential lawmakers take a backseat to candidates rooted primarily in sensationalism. The emergence of fake compassion and viral moments detracts from the profound responsibilities that come with legislative roles.

This trajectory signals peril for Philippine governance. When public approval hinges solely on visibility and emotional resonance, voters inadvertently elevate individuals wholly unprepared for the challenges of legislation. The dazzling personas crafted via social media, combined with catchy marketing campaigns, further reinforce the idea that popularity outweighs capability. Such a perception poses a detrimental risk, as laws and policies affecting civil rights, economic development, and social justice are presented to individuals lacking the requisite understanding of governing intricacies.

Reflecting on our past, we see a stark contrast to the illustrious legal minds who once filled the Senate. These were leaders anchored in intellect, experience, and a firm grasp of constitutional principles, as opposed to the current mediocrity that dominates our legislative body—often characterized by silence and compliance. A degree of ignorance among the electorate regarding competent governance underscores this tragedy.

Many voters overlook the significant implications of electing senators whose decisions influence legislation impacting thousands of Filipinos. Rather than scrutinizing candidates’ qualifications critically, many opt for entertaining appearances that obscure their true legislative abilities. This political climate requires illumination; it’s time for voters to understand the gravity of their choices fully.

As the election heats up and media blitz approaches, let’s pledge to dissect the noise surrounding flashy advertisements and empty promises. Engage in discussions, educate yourselves, and push your community to assess each candidate’s credentials fairly and robustly. Each vote cast should not only pronounce favor for a familiar name but embody a commitment to uplift our governance and legislative efficacy.

We stand at a pivotal moment in our political history when the temptation of celebrity must not overshadow our nation’s legislative integrity. It is our duty to ensure that Senate seats are occupied by candidates prepared to usher in reform grounded in legal acumen and authentic public service. The power lies with us—the voters. Therefore, let us restore wisdom at the center of our electoral journey.

Substantive dialogue must guide our path forward, empowering us to make enlightened choices as we head toward the 2025 senatorial elections. We cannot afford to allow the aura of celebrity precedence over legitimate governance. Instead, we need to evaluate candidates critically, making sure that our options reflect the needs of a populace deserving of true representation.

Furthermore, we face various factors that may complicate our quest for capable candidates—most notably, the split between the Marcos administration and Vice President Sara Duterte’s faction. With several impeachment cases pending against her,  the number of winning senators of  both sides is very crucial.   Both Marcos and Duterte groups command significant voting blocs, raising questions on  mobilizing  local political dynasties, grassroots, and entrenched networks during the upcoming election. Will the enduring legacy of Marcos or Duterte’s fervent support prevail?

Adding another layer of complexity is the AKAP (Alay sa Kapos ang Kita) program from the DSWD, which benefitted millions of under-salaried employees last year. A target of shrinking budgets from a proposed 11 million to merely 5 million recipients can decimate voter turnout when these citizens—though economically marginalized—should hold significant sway in shaping electoral outcomes. The community’s decision-making process concerning these programs is a harbinger of how grassroots sentiments will materialize at the polls.

As we edge closer to May, the confrontation between the allure of popularity and the undeniable weight of capability will sharpen dramatically against the backdrop of shifting command votes from entrenched political families. Both the Marcos and Duterte factions are firmly situated within the political machinations necessary to mobilize their constituencies. This battle, along with traditional religious blocks that support the Duterte clan, adds intrigue to upcoming contests.

Ultimately, whatever the pending results might suggest, we must be united in our hopes for a Senate that strives for excellence and accountability. A government that transcends showmanship to establish a principled understanding of meaningful governance is what the Filipino people deserve. Our collective aspirations necessitate that we look beyond simple names and reputations, instead forging a commitment to pursue worthy candidates who embody our shared ideals. Together we can secure a Senate that appreciates what is required, ensuring that our representatives are truly dedicated to serving the myriad complexities of governance and the diverse needs of our people.
