SINGAPORE – British band Coldplay did not have to go out of this world to film their latest music video for the song Man In The Moon (2024).
Instead, the pop-rock quartet, fronted by singer Chris Martin, ended up doing it a little closer to home – at least to their fans in Singapore.
The music video features the band performing on a custom-made floating stage in Marina Bay to a small audience made up of local youth from diverse backgrounds.
The city skyline, including landmarks such as Marina Bay Sands, Singapore Flyer and Gardens by the Bay, can be seen in the background.
The video, which runs a little under four minutes, also features the youth in various locations around Singapore.
Besides prominent places like Jewel Changi Airport and S.E.A. Aquarium at Resorts World Sentosa, as well as historic places like Fort Canning Park, heartland spots also get their moment. These include an HDB estate in MacPherson and Mountain Coffee, a coffee shop in Geylang.
The youth then gather at the floating stage and dance and sing along to Coldplay’s performance.
In partnership with Warner Music Singapore and the Singapore Tourism Board (STB), the music video was shot during the Singapore stop of their Music of the Spheres World Tour in January 2024. They performed six sold-out nights at the National Stadium.
The band said in a statement: “While we were in Singapore, we shot the video and captured some of the amazing, young, vibrant people whom we had met. We are interested in shooting things in places we have never filmed before and mixing people up as much as possible. It was really fun to have a kind of dance party out in the middle of the water, just us and the otters.”

According to a press statement, the multicultural aspect of the music video embodies Man In The Moon’s “theme of unity and shared experiences transcending individual differences”. The track is from Moon Music (Full Moon Edition), a bonus edition of their 10th studio album Moon Music (2024).
One of the youth featured, model Akihiko Turner, told The Straits Times at the music video’s premiere at Marina Bay Sands’ SkyPark on Feb 5 that the three-day shoot he was involved in was tiring but enjoyable.
The 25-year-old, who portrays a cosplayer, added: “The hours were long, but they were worth it. I got to meet a lot of people, and meeting Chris Martin was very fun.”
Musician Tenzin Tsundu, 22, said he was sceptical when local video and film production company The Hummingbird Co approached him about his part, which involved sliding down a slope at Fort Canning Park on an ice slab.
When he realised the offer was legitimate, he became excited about being part of a project that would be seen by millions around the world.
He added: “For Coldplay to feature our HDB estates and coffee shops, things that we see daily, it gives people insight into how Singaporeans live.”

The video includes appearances by local personalities such as visual artist Sam Lo, also known as Sticker Lady, who is shown spray-painting a mural at People’s Park Complex in Chinatown.
Singer-songwriter Shazza is on what looks like a skate scooter around the alleys of Kampong Glam, while radio DJ Avery Aloysius Yeo rides a scooter on the road.
A group of youth is captured singing in Level Up, an arcade and live music bar in Clarke Quay, while a couple of cosplayers are filmed meeting at Gardens by the Bay and Jewel Changi Airport.
The music video is the latest in a series of STB projects with global pop acts – including American singers Billie Eilish and Charlie Puth, American band OneRepublic and Hong Kong-born star Jackson Wang – who filmed at various locations here.
