MANDALAY – The Mandalay High-Level Market, which was damaged by the earthquake, will be demolished, and the market will reopen from April 24, as the main building of the market is strong, the Market Management Association has announced.
The powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck on March 28, 2025, caused some damage to the four-story building on the north side of Mandalay Market and the collapse of a portion of the south side of the four-story building on the south side.
On April 3, a team of experts from the Indian Army and the Indian Army’s Disaster and Demolition Engineering Team conducted an inspection on April 7 to assess the strength and safety of each of the earthquake-affected market buildings in the market area. According to the inspection findings, the south/north tower market buildings will be classified as red and demolished. The main structure of the high-rise market was found to be in good condition with no damage to the main structure.
Currently, the market will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. from April 21 to April 23 to allow shopkeepers to clean and renovate their stalls. The market management board has announced that the high-end market will reopen on April 24 after conducting an internal inspection and clearing the entrances and exits.
