PHNOM PENH – More than 11 tonnes of frozen meat product were confiscated over the weekend by the Animal Health and Production Crime Crackdown Task Force. The products were imported from Vietnam, with plans to distribute them domestically, without the appropriate permits.

On Sunday, July 6, the task force, under the General Directorate of Animal Health and Production, intercepted a Hyundai truck which was carrying 502 cartons of frozen meat — weighing 8.015 tonnes — on the 30-Metre Road Phnom Penh’s Prey Sar commune, in Dangkor district.

The driver admitted to officers that the load had been transported from Vietnam via the Prek Chrey border crossing in Koh Thom district, Kandal province, and was intended for distribution in Phnom Penh, despite no permits having been issued.

Separately, on the morning of Saturday, July 5, the same task force stopped another vehicle, a van, on the Kob Srov road in Phnom Penh’s Kok Roka commune, in Prek Pnov district. It was also transporting illegal frozen meat products.

The shipment contained 275 cartons, weighing a total of 3.72 tonnes, including chicken wings and pig feet.

The second driver had brought the frozen meat from Vietnam via a check point crossing in Ponhea Krek district, Tbong Khmum province, and also intended to distribute it in Phnom Penh without any official permits.

As in the first case, the task force transported the seized evidence to the animal quarantine centre of the General Directorate of Animal Health and Production for legal processing.
