PUTRAJAYA –  Family reunion dinners will be allowed on Chinese New Year’s eve on Jan 31, says the National Unity Ministry.

It was not mentioned if there is a cap on the number of people attending the dinner and open houses will not be allowed throughout the celebration.

National Unity Minister Datuk Halimah Mohamed Sadique, who announced the standard operating procedures (SOP) for the upcoming Chinese New Year celebrations, said prayers on the first and second days of the Lunar New Year on Feb1 and 2 would be allowed, with standard operating procedures under Phase Four the National Recovery Plan in place.

Special prayers for Hokkien clan, which falls on Feb 8 and 9, as well as prayers for Chap Goh Mei on Feb 15 are allowed.

“While open houses cannot be held, Chinese New Year receptions can be held but by invitation only.

“The reception cannot be held in multiple sessions and is not open to the public,” she said at a press conference on Wednesday (Jan 19).

Also present was Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

Halimah said basic SOP must be followed such as ensuring guests register their attendance via MySejahtera, temperature checks and to ensure attendees are fully vaccinated.

Lion, dragon and tiger dances can be performed and are subject to creative industry SOPs.

Meanwhile, Dr Wee said the SOP announcement is good news to the Chinese community.

“While we can enjoy the celebration, it is important that we continue to adhere to the SOP for the safety and health of everyone,” he said.
