NEW DELHI – While ordering authorities to remove stray dogs from streets in Delhi-NCR and put them in shelters, the Supreme Court on Monday issued a stern warning to individuals and organisations of strict action if they tried to come in the way of authorities.
“If any person or organisation comes in way of picking up of stray dogs, action will be taken,” a bench of justices JB Pardiwala and R Mahadevan said.
The bench noted that the order has been issued keeping the larger public interest in mind.
In its order, the court directed civic authorities in Delhi NCR to make dog shelters and report about creation of infrastructure within eight weeks.
The shelters, as per the court order, must have sufficient personnel for sterilised, dogs who would be detained there and not released in public places.
“It will be monitored by CCTV to monitor that no dogs are taken out,” the top court said.
The apex court has also directed authorities to create a helpline within one week so that all cases of dog bites and rabies are reported.
“Action should be taken within 4 hours to pick up dog after complaint is received and any action of individual or organisation coming in the way will be taken with stern action. The said dog will be sterilised and shall not be released,” the court added.
