PHNOM PENH – The Ministry of National Defence on Wednesday announced that Cambodia has formally welcomed the arrival of the ASEAN Interim Observer Team (IOT). The team are tasked with monitoring and supporting the ceasefire agreement between Cambodia and Thailand.
The ministry described the presence of the team as a reflection of ASEAN’s collective commitment, particularly under Malaysia’s chairmanship, to promote peace, stability, cooperation and development for the peoples of both nations.
“This represents the active participation of ASEAN member states, particularly Malaysia in its role as chair, in supporting a peaceful resolution between the two nations,” the ministry said in a statement.
The Interim Observer Team (IOT), led by Brigadier General Dato’ Pahlawan Asri bin Shukor, director of Training at the Royal Malaysian Army HQ and Head of Mission (HOM) of the IOT, arrived at Techo International Airport along with representatives from Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines.
“This reflects our shared commitment to ensuring the ceasefire is successful and enduring, with the aim of restoring peace, stability, cooperation and development for the peoples of Cambodia and Thailand,” added the ministry.
The initiative stems from the outcomes of the July 28 Cambodia–Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) Special Meeting held in Malaysia and the August 7 Extraordinary Meeting.
