NEW DELHI – Amid recent political unrest and Gen Z protests in the country, the Nepali film ‘Anjila’ has been officially recommended for the International Feature Film category at the 98th Academy Awards.
The announcement came out from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ selection committee on Thursday.
Two Nepali films, ‘Anjila’ and ‘Gunyu Cholo’, had applied for consideration this year. Ultimately, ‘Anjila’, directed by Milan Chams, made its way ahead.
‘Anjila’ tells the inspiring real-life story of Anjila Tumbapo Subba, captain and number one goalkeeper of Nepal’s national women’s football team. The movie captures her journey from the confines of her home to leading the national team. It shows the challenges she faced and the determination that helped her rise to success.

Remarkably, Anjila plays herself in the film, while acclaimed actors Dayahang Rai and Srijana Subba portray her parents.
The 98th Academy Awards will take place on March 15, 2026, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, USA. The first shortlist of 15 films in the International Feature category will be out on December 16, 2025. And, the result of final nominees will be out on January 22, 2026.
