SHANGHAI – Malaysia and China have entered a new chapter in higher education collaboration through the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that will open more opportunities for both countries.

The MOU, signed by Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), is aimed at strengthening academic, research and cultural cooperation between Malaysia and China, says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

The Deputy Prime Minister said the MOU is a key step in supporting Mara’s global education agenda.

“SJTU’s global reputation for excellence in engineering, science, medicine and innovation is well known, and we in Malaysia hold this institution in the highest regard.

“We hope with the signing of this MOU, it will open meaningful opportunities for both our institutions and our nations,” he said at the signing ceremony, Bernama reported.

Ahmad Zahid expressed appreciation to SJTU chairman Yang Zhenbin to advancing educational ties.

He said Mara aims to leverage SJTU’s expertise in engineering, artificial intelligence (AI), computer science, medicine and maritime studies, through the proposed establishment of a technical advisory committee focusing on data analytics and green technology, among others.

Both parties also welcomed opportunities for academic staff exchange and training, including SJTU academics delivering lectures or residencies at Mara institutions.

Under the MOU, Mara lecturers will undergo training at SJTU to strengthen expertise in quantum technology, aerospace engineering and biomedical sciences.

SJTU is ranked 45th among the top global universities, and there are about 235 Malaysian students studying at the university.

Earlier, Ahmad Zahid attended the opening of the 8th China International Import Expo (CIIE) at the invitation of the Chinese government.

The Deputy Prime Minister, who is on a four-day working visit to Shanghai, will open the Malaysia International Halal Showcase (Mihas) Shanghai 2025 today.

“China remains one of Malaysia’s most important trading partners.

“Through platforms such as CIIE and Mihas@Shanghai, we not only reinforce our bilateral economic relations but also create new opportunities for Malaysia’s halal industry and SMEs to access high-value global markets,” he said.
