MANILA – The rally mounted by the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) at the Epifanio delos Santos Avenue (Edsa)-White Plains Avenue area in Quezon City entered its second day on Wednesday, July 1.
At least 4,000 participants so far were in the area as of 5 a.m., according to the Quezon City Police District’s (QCPD) latest crowd estimate in a text message to reporters.
Some of the participants camped out in their vehicles, in tents and on their mats through Monday night.
Music began to play on the rally’s sound systems sometime around 5:30 a.m.
As of 5:20 a.m., the Inquirer observed two northbound lanes of Edsa were open for traffic, while all lanes of White Plains Avenue heading to Edsa remained closed.
At least two northbound lanes of Edsa were still occupied by parked vehicles, both from the participants and from law enforcement, stretching from Edsa-Ortigas Avenue to around Camp Aguinaldo Gate 3.
The protest-action began early Tuesday morning, mounted by the INC in support of Sen. Rodante Marcoleta, who faces an impending plunder case in connection with a P75-million donation right before his 2025 senatorial bid.
The Tuesday rally crippled Edsa-White Plains during the morning rush hour as only one northbound lane on Edsa was passable and traffic was slow-moving on all Edsa southbound lanes.
Despite this, the Quezon City local government granted a permit for the rally’s second day.
Among the permit’s conditions were that the event be held along White Plains Avenue only from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and that no roads be blocked during the conduct of the protest-action.
