Shanghai heatwave sets new annual record

Over the past 150 years, the city has seen 20 days in which temperatures exceeded 40 C. Before 2009, this had only happened twice.

SHANGHAI – The Shanghai Meteorological Center recorded a temperature of 40.1 C at noon on Thursday, marking the sixth day the city has experienced extreme heat and making 2022 the year with the most number of extremely hot days since Shanghai started keeping meteorological records in 1873.

Over the past 150 years, the city has seen 20 days in which temperatures exceeded 40 C. Before 2009, this had only happened twice in 1934.

Due to strong subtropical high pressure, the heatwave will continue to scorch Shanghai in the coming days, according to the forecast.
