PHNOM PENH – Prime Minister Hun Sen will meet Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelenskyy for virtual talks on November 1, the prime minister confirmed this morning.

Hun Sen spoke while distributing more than 684 tonnes of rice seed to 6,844 families from nine districts in Kampong Thom province.

“It has been confirmed that on November 1 I will share a phone conversation with the Ukrainian president,” he said, adding that he had revealed the plan earlier, but the time of the call had not been set, due to time differences between the two nations.

He explained that Ukraine wanted to establish a relationship with ASEAN, of which Cambodia is currently chair.

“I think it is important that I explain the purpose of the meeting. We must meet with him, as I have also invited Russia president Putin to attend the ASEAN summit in Phnom Penh, although we have not yet received a response. Zelenskyy specifically requested a conversation with the ASEAN chair,” he said.

Cambodia has taken a strong position against the Russian invasion of Ukraine on various occasions, while also opposing the heavy sanctions leveled against Russia, due to their far-reaching global economic effects.
