Cyclone Mocha: 2,826 shanties damaged in Rohingya camps

Among those, 278 shanties were damaged completely while 2,548 were partially damaged.

DHAKA – A total 2,826 shanties were damaged in Rohingya camps in Teknaf and Ukhiya of Cox’s Bazar due to the impact of Cyclone Mocha, according to a report prepared by the Office of the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner (RRRC).

Among those, 278 shanties were damaged completely while 2,548 were partially damaged, according to the report compiled around 11:00pm.

Seven Rohingyas were also injured during the cyclone.

Besides 32 learning centres, one health centre and 29 mosques, were also affected.

The report added that around 135 feet of road in the Rohingya camps was damaged while there were landslides in 120 places in the camps.

A total of 5,386 Rohingyas have been relocated to safer places from the risky zone.

As precautionary measures, shelter kits have been kept aside and will be used for the rehabilitation of the Rohingyas’ shanties after the rain stops, said Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner (RRRC) Mohammed Mizanur Rahman.

Initial reports had suggested around 500 makeshift houses were damaged due to the cyclone.
