About 1,800 fires occur in Myanmar annually, causing estimated US$582mil in losses

The fire brigade has set four major tasks in line with the guidelines of the Ministry of Home Affairs, and the tasks of firefighting are to respond to emergencies in a timely manner.

YANGON – Vice President (1) U Nyo Saw said that about 1,800 fires occur in Myanmar every year, causing about 19 billion baht in losses.

This was stated by Vice President (1) U Nyo Saw in his speech at the 80th Myanmar Firefighters Day ceremony held at the Myanmar International Convention Center-1 (MICC-I) in Nay Pyi Taw on the morning of May 5 .

Vice President (1) U Nyo Saw said that fire hazards are a major challenge that has arisen due to the socio-economic development and industrial growth of the country in recent times. He said that in the 10-year period from 2014 to 2023, more than 18,000 fires occurred in Myanmar, with an estimated loss of over 187 billion kyats. There are about 1,800 fires every year, with an estimated loss of 19 billion kyats. He said that efforts to reduce fires have been made, with 1,150 fires in 2024 and 1,018 fires in 2025, with the number of fires and losses decreasing year by year. He acknowledged the efforts of Myanmar fire brigades, reserve fire brigades, and private fire brigades in fire prevention and fire prevention.

In addition, the fire brigade has set four major tasks in line with the guidelines of the Ministry of Home Affairs, and the tasks of firefighting are to respond to emergencies in a timely manner. Therefore, they must strategically carry out training, implementation, and review in accordance with the relevant fields and always be ready. The fire brigade also carries out rescue and rehabilitation work in natural disasters and other sudden disasters. Therefore, today’s fire brigade is not only engaged in firefighting, but also in search and rescue work, natural disaster management, and emergency medical protection work, and it is necessary to implement them in accordance with the slogans of “”Fast 3 Fast”” and “”Effective 4 Effective””.

At the 80th Myanmar Fire Brigade Day ceremony held at the Myanmar International Convention Center-1 ( MICC-I) in Nay Pyi Taw, the Vice President (1) presented awards to U Tun Shwe, a nationally renowned singer who sang the classic song ‘Beware of Fire’, former firefighters aged 95 and above, and the Deputy Commander of the Yangon Region, Dagon Myo Thit (South) Township Fire Brigade who had volunteered in firefighting. After that, the video recording of the 80th Myanmar Fire Brigade Day was watched and the regional/state-specific photo galleries, antique and historical firefighting equipment galleries, advanced emergency response communication systems, the latest modern firefighting and search and rescue equipment galleries were displayed in the hall. Officials explained the exhibits and sections of the exhibition to the visitors, who toured the antique fire engines, modern fire engines/machines, and search dog demonstrations on display at the (MICC-I) premises.

The ceremony was attended by Vice President (1) U Nyo Saw, members of the government including General Tun Aung, Lt. General Nyunt Win Swe, Union Ministers, Chairmen and Secretaries of Union-level Committees/Commissions, Chairmen and Vice Chairmen of Union-level Organizations, Senior Military Officers, Deputy Ministers, Nay Pyi Taw Council Members, Permanent Secretaries, Heads of Departments, Officers and Personnel from the Myanmar Fire Service Headquarters, Retired Fire Service Officers, Representatives of Active, Reserve, and Private Fire Services from various Regions/States, Fire Service Awardees, and Invited Guests.
