PETALING JAYA – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim warns that no one should incite and fuel racial and religious sentiments.
He also stated there were no double standards in action taken against those found guilty of mocking religion or race as all punishment meted out follows due process.
This was conveyed by Anwar’s senior press secretary Tunku Nashrul Abaidah during the daily Prime Minister’s Office briefing on Thursday (March 6).
“This serves as a firm message to all Malaysians to stop the culture of insulting any religion, culture, or ethnicity.
“Anwar acknowledged that some parties with vested interests are attempting to create the perception of double standards in law enforcement.
“However, he dismissed such accusations as baseless, reaffirming that anyone who insults any religion in Malaysia will be investigated and prosecuted,” said Tunku Nashrul.
He listed action taken by the authorities on those who had ridiculed religion, such as KK Mart and its supplier being fined RM60,000 for selling socks with the word “Allah”, the corn seller who was fined RM400 for displaying a racist notice as well as comedian Harith Iskander and a Cecelia Yap who were fined RM10,000 each for posting offensive content on Islam.
“The claim that the government remains silent when Islam is insulted is false and unfounded. “The listed cases demonstrate that every incident is investigated, prosecuted and penalised under existing laws. Any reported case follows due legal processes.
“Petty issues should not undermine our national strength and unity, especially when Malaysia is progressing on a positive trajectory,” said Tunku Nashrul.
