VIENTIANE – The ASEAN-China Media Cooperation Forum, which took place in China last week, saw participants discuss ways to deepen cooperation among member countries and improve the media links between ASEAN and China.

The 2024 ASEAN-China Media Forum took the theme “Amity and Innovation Matters for a Shared Future”, with the opening ceremony held in Dezhou, Shandong province, on June 21.
On behalf of the Lao delegation attending the forum, Deputy Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism Mr Phosy Keomanivong said the most important role of the information and media sector in ASEAN is to take on new missions and proactively open up new horizons for development to build a peaceful and prosperous ASEAN Community.

“This will require a transformation from information to more knowledge and understanding. Leading this transformation and accomplishing this mission can be a valuable contribution of ASEAN to the global information and media industry,” he said.

Laos has made a great effort to evolve from traditional approaches to the use of digital systems, which are being applied to government, the economy, and society as a whole.
This is being done by promoting “new media” and providing the public with digital access to information through various platforms.

“Through this focus, we aim to deliver more timely information and target a wider audience across the country, especially people living in remote areas,” Mr Phosy said.
These policies help to enhance and accelerate economic growth, people’s well-being, social progress, and cultural development. They also provide more job opportunities, especially for the younger generation, he added.

The government is actively developing and transforming digital infrastructure in the media and information sector by cooperating with strategic partner countries in the region to create more modern systems.

Laos stands ready to work closely with all ASEAN Member States and Dialogue Partners, particularly China as an ASEAN Comprehensive and Strategic Partner, helping to advance connectivity and prosperity in the region.

The Lao government hopes to source funding and other support from ASEAN Member States and Dialogue Partners to improve digital broadcasting in Laos, the deputy minister said.
Mr Phosy reminded the audience that 2024 is an important year for Laos as the country is not only the Chair of ASEAN and the ASEAN-China Year of People-to-People Exchange, but is also rolling out the Visit Laos Year programme.

In this regard, he requested the cooperation and support of all ASEAN Member States and Dialogue Partners, including China, to ensure Laos’ success in these endeavours.
