BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN – Minister of Foreign Affairs II Dato Seri Setia Haji Erywan bin Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Haji Mohd Yusof underscored the importance of upholding international law, promoting dialogue and strengthening cooperation to address ongoing global challenges.
Speaking at a press conference following the 25th ASEAN-European Union Ministerial Meeting, he highlighted the need for closer coordination between ASEAN and the European Union (EU) in responding to the Middle East conflict and global supply chain disruptions.
Responding to a question on how both regions could address the issues, the minister noted that the conflict, which initially affected the energy sector, has since extended its impact to global supply chains, placing pressure on economies worldwide.
“We need to address the Middle East conflict and supply chain challenges together and not separately,” he said.
He added that while ASEAN and the EU are not direct actors in the Middle East, both blocs can contribute by reinforcing the principles of international law, supporting de-escalation efforts and encouraging dialogue.
“By upholding these principles, we can help prevent further escalation and maintain long-term stability,” he said.
At the same time, he stressed the importance of mitigating economic impacts through stronger coordination, maintaining open and predictable trade flows, diversifying supply sources and enhancing collaboration on regional initiatives such as the ASEAN Power Grid.
The minister described the meeting in Bandar Seri Begawan as “very productive”, noting that discussions reaffirmed the strategic importance of the ASEAN-EU partnership.
“In today’s world, no region can tackle global challenges alone. This is why the ASEAN-EU partnership is a strategic choice,” he said, adding that both sides agreed to deepen cooperation in maintaining peace and strengthening economic resilience.
On security, he said both regions are enhancing cooperation to address cybersecurity threats and transnational crime, issues that directly affect public safety and institutional trust.
Economically, he noted a shared interest in strengthening trade and investment ties, including efforts towards a region-to-region free trade agreement. He also highlighted collaboration in emerging areas such as the digital economy and energy transition, welcoming EU support for the ASEAN Power Grid.
The minister also emphasised the importance of strengthening people-to-people ties, including exchanges among students, professionals, businesses and researchers to foster greater mutual understanding.
He added that discussions also covered regional and global developments, including the situations in Ukraine and the Middle East.
“At a time of uncertainty, ASEAN and the EU stand for the same principles. We believe in international law and a rules-based international order,” he said.
He stressed that both regions have the responsibility and capacity to act as anchors of stability and should work more closely in a spirit of inclusivity, mutual trust and respect.
