NEW DELHI – US President Donald Trump on Tuesday criticised the United Nations, saying it is “empty words, and empty words don’t solve wars.”
Addressing the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Session in New York, his first since 2020, Trump said that he ended seven wars, including India and Pakistan, in a period of just seven months, something that, according to the US President, should have been the work of the United Nations.
“I ended seven wars… No president or prime minister, and for that matter, no other country has ever done anything close to that. I did it in just seven months. It’s never happened before. I’m very honoured to have done it. It’s too bad that I had to do these things instead of the United Nations doing them,” he said.
The US President said that the UN did not even try to help in any of the wars he mentioned.
“I ended seven wars, dealt with the leaders of each and every one of these countries, and never even received a phone call from the United Nations offering to help in finalising the deal,” he said.
On a lighter note, the US President said that all he got from the UN was an escalator that stopped right in the middle and a teleprompter that didn’t work.
“All I got from the United Nations was an escalator that, on the way up, stopped right in the middle. If the First Lady wasn’t in great shape, she would have fallen, but she’s in great shape. We’re both in good shape. And then a teleprompter that didn’t work. These are the 2 things I got from the United Nations…,” he said.
Trump further questioned the purpose of the United Nations if the global organisation is not living up to its potential.
“They weren’t there. I thought of it really after the fact, not during these negotiations, which were not easy. That being the case, what is the purpose of the United Nations? The UN has such tremendous potential. It has such tremendous potential, but it’s not even coming close to living up to that potential, for the most part…,” he added.
‘India, China primary funders of Russia’s war in Ukraine’
From the global stage, Trump also launched a scathing attack on India and China, accusing the two nations of funding Russia’s war in Ukraine. However, he also ceiticised NATO countries for their energy trade with Russia.
“China and India are the primary funders of the ongoing war by continuing to purchase Russian oil. But inexcusably, even NATO countries have not cut off much Russian energy and Russian energy products, which, as you know, I found out about two weeks ago, and I wasn’t happy. They’re funding the war against themselves….,” the US President said.
Trump said that the US was prepared to impose a “very strong round of powerful tariffs”, calling on his European allies to join his efforts in ending the Ukraine conflict by adopting similar measures.
“In the event that Russia is not ready to make a deal to end the war, then the United States is fully prepared to impose a very strong round of powerful tariffs, which would stop the bloodshed, I believe, very quickly. For those tariffs to be effective, European nations, all of you are gathered here right now, would have to join us in adopting the exact same measures,” he added.
