DHAKA – Women and children among those stranded at border zero line; BSF yet to respond to flag meeting proposal, says BGB
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) says it has thwarted an attempt by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) to push nine people, including women and children, into Bangladesh through two border points in Kurigram’s Roumari upazila early today.
The individuals remained stranded at the border’s zero line as BGB sought a flag meeting with BSF to discuss the incident. The Indian border force had yet to respond as of 2:00pm, officials said.
According to BGB and local sources, members of the BSF’s Jalurchar camp in Assam’s Dhubri district attempted to push six people — three men, one woman and two children — into Bangladesh through the Goytapara border near Sub-Pillar No. 1 of International Border Pillar 1060 before dawn.
BGB personnel and local residents resisted the move, forcing the BSF members to retreat, sources said. The six individuals were later left in an open area near the border fence on the Indian side.
At around the same time, another attempt was allegedly made to push three more people into Bangladesh through the Bhandurchar border adjacent to the Baraibari BOP camp. That attempt was also foiled due to the presence of BGB personnel and local residents, according to sources.
Lt Col Hasanur Rahman, commanding officer of the 35 BGB Battalion in Jamalpur, confirmed the incident.
“We are maintaining maximum vigilance to prevent any illegal push-in attempts along the border. The situation is being closely monitored,” he said.
Local residents said they were assisting BGB in monitoring the border and preventing any unauthorised entry into Bangladesh.
The identities of the stranded individuals could not be immediately verified.
