DHAKA – The government has instructed the deputy commissioners (DCs) of all 64 districts to ensure that cultural programmes, trade fairs and billboard lighting are turned off by 7:00 pm, signalling a stricter push to conserve electricity.

The Cabinet Division issued the directive today, sending instructions to all divisional commissioners and DCs. The move follows previous austerity measures, including reducing office hours by one hour and ordering shops and shopping malls to close by 7:00 pm, with an overarching target of saving 3,100 MW of electricity daily.

“This rule will be applicable to ongoing and upcoming fairs, trade fairs, and cultural programmes in different parts of the country,” the directive noted.

Earlier, the Power Division had requested the Cabinet Division to take necessary steps to issue directives to all divisional commissioners and DCs for nationwide implementation.
