DHAKA – The government will amend laws where necessary to curb mob violence, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said today
Speaking as a special guest at the “Prime Minister’s Special Welfare Meeting” organised at the Rajarbagh Police Auditorium in Dhaka, marking Police Week 2026, he said the government was working within the existing legal framework to tackle “mob culture”.
“We have spoken about mob culture before as well. We are taking action within the scope of existing laws as much as possible. However, if legal reforms or amendments are needed, those will also be made,” the home minister said.
“Today, I requested the home secretary and the IGP to remind me again about the issue. There may be a need for amendments or new legal provisions if mob culture has to be addressed separately, because the existing laws alone are not fully adequate to deal with it,” he added.
Salahuddin also said, the government would consider meeting the “reasonable demands” of police personnel, subject to the country’s financial capacity, as part of efforts to build a modern, capable police force.
Many constables retire after 40 years of service without receiving a promotion, he added.
To address this, the government plans to introduce a policy allowing honorary promotions for police personnel with satisfactory service records upon retirement.
Under the proposal, constables could receive honorary promotions to assistant sub-inspector (ASI), ASIs to sub-inspector (SI), and SIs to inspector.
Salahuddin also said the government was considering introducing overtime allowances for police personnel working extended hours. The proposed benefits could apply to officers from inspector rank down to constable.
Highlighting the long working hours and heavy workload faced by police members, he said central and divisional police hospitals would be modernised and expanded to better protect officers’ physical and mental health. More advanced hospitals could also be built following further assessments, he added.
The minister said the government was prioritising efforts to address accommodation shortages and construct buildings and offices for various police units, including by allocating funds for land acquisition.
Referring to law and order, he said the situation had visibly improved over the past two months and that drives against listed terrorists, extortionists and drug traffickers were continuing.
Salahuddin said a committee had been formed to recommend updating laws to tackle gambling, online gambling, cybercrime and money laundering.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman attended the event as chief guest; Senior Secretary of the Home Ministry Manzur Morshed Chowdhury spoke at the event as a special guest. IGP Md Ali Hossain Fakir delivered the welcome speech and Additional IGP (Crime and Operations) Khondoker Rafiqul Islam gave the vote of thanks.
