DHAKA – The court further directed the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development and Dhaka Wasa to submit a compliance report within three months.
The HC bench of Justice Ahmed Sohel and Justice Fatema Anwar issued the order following a writ petition seeking necessary directives in this regard.
Supreme Court lawyer Md Monir Uddin filed the petition as a public interest litigation, attaching reports of several incidents in which children fell into the shafts of abandoned tube wells and died.
In December 2014, a child named Jihad died after falling into an abandoned tube well shaft in Shahjahanpur area of the capital.
More recently, on December 10, 2025, a child named Sajid died after falling into a similar shaft in Tanore upazila of Rajshahi.
Another similar incident happened in Raozan upazila of Chattogram in January 2026.
Citing these incidents, the petitioner prayed to the court give directives to the authorities to identify all abandoned deep tube wells across the country and take effective measures to prevent such accidents in the future.
After hearing the petition, the HC bench ordered the relevant government bodies to take necessary steps to fill up the abandoned deep tube well shafts and submit a compliance report within three months.
