DHAKA – The body of 20-year-old Mohammad Hasan, killed during the mass uprising, was handed over to his family yesterday evening from the Dhaka Medical College (DMC) morgue.

Hasan was killed in Jatrabari on August 5, confirmed Sub-Inspector Morshed Alam of Jatrabari Police Station to The Daily Star.

On January 10, the bodies of six people killed in the uprising were found in the DMC morgue. The next day, another body was discovered.

Hasan’s father, Monir Hossain, told journalists, “On January 12, my brother and Hasan’s aunt identified his body at the DMC morgue. The next day, following a court order via Jatrabari Police Station, my wife and I provided DNA samples at the CID office. On Wednesday, we were informed that Hasan’s DNA matched ours.”

Monir Hossain mentioned that their family home is in Bhola’s Sadar upazila.

“Hasan lived in the Sutikhali Para Balur Maath area of Jatrabari and worked at an electric shop in Ershad Market, Gulistan. On the afternoon of August 5, he left home and never returned,” he said.

Hasan’s funeral prayer (Janaza) will be held tomorrow at the Dhaka University Central Mosque after the Friday prayer.

Just after the fall of Awami League-led government, a photo of a body lying on the streets of Jatrabari, with wires wrapped around its legs, went viral. Monir confirmed it was Hasan’s body.

DMC morgue in-charge, Ramu Chandra Das, said, “One body has been handed over. Six more bodies, including that of a woman, remain in the hospital morgue. All bodies have undergone postmortem examinations. Although their families have not been found, DNA samples have been collected and stored.”
