DHAKA – Television, newspapers and online media are working in an environment of fear and anxiety and no one can speak freely at present, Jatiya Party Chairman and Deputy Leader of Opposition GM Quader said today (September 18, 2022).

He also said journalists are forced to impose self-censorship on themselves when publishing news.

GM Quader said this while holding a view exchange meeting with the leaders of the National Unity of Journalists (NUJ) at the Banani office of the Chairman of Jatiya Party.

Referring to the information of Center for Governance Studies (CGS), GM Quader said that 208 journalists have been accused in 108 cases under the Digital Security Act in the last two years.

“This has proved that the Digital Security Act was created to curb the voice of media. This black law needs to be amended immediately,” he also said.

“By weakening the country’s media, the country is indirectly being helped to make it a haven of irregularities and corruption,” he added.

The democracy of a country is as strong as its media’s independence, he said.

Convenor of National Unity of Journalists Deloar Jalali presided over the programme.
