DHAKA – Bangladesh head coach Javier Cabrera is confident that the inclusion of midfielder Hamza Choudhury will be a decisive factor in their upcoming Asian Cup Qualifiers match against India in Shillong on March 25.
As the Bangladesh team returned home yesterday from a 12-day training camp in Saudi Arabia, Cabrera expressed his optimism about the Leicester City midfielder’s impact on the team. Speaking to reporters at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, the Spanish tactician emphasised the significance of Hamza’s presence.
“Of course, it is a great strength to have Hamza, a player from the English Premier League, coming here to represent Bangladesh. He will make the difference against India,” Cabrera stated confidently.
“It will have a very big impact on the team for sure—his leadership and his professionalism. I think he is also excited to play for the national team. Definitely, something good will come.”
Cabrera, who had a meeting with Hamza in Dhaka tonight, revealed that the entire squad was eager to welcome him and start preparing for the crucial clash against India.
“Everyone is excited. All the players want to meet him and train with him. I have been in touch with him almost every week. I am looking forward to starting planning together on how to beat India.”
With Hamza, who currently plays as a right-back for Sheffield United, joining the squad, Cabrera believes Bangladesh have a fair shot at victory, despite India’s decision to bring their legendary striker Sunil Chhetri out of retirement.
“It is interesting that Sunil Chhetri came back for the encounter, making everyone excited and motivated. India are a very strong team, but we are getting better and better. I’m expecting a 50-50 match,” Cabrera said.
Acknowledging the strength of their rivals, Cabrera remains optimistic that Hamza’s inclusion will elevate Bangladesh’s game to a new level. “We have a lot of respect for the Indian team, playing either home or away. We do believe we already have a level, and the inclusion of Hamza will definitely give us an extra edge.”
With renewed hope and Hamza’s international experience, Bangladesh’s clash against India promises to be an exciting and fiercely contested battle.
