Bangladesh’s food security protected amid global crisis: PM Hasina

PM Sheikh Hasina said Bangladesh has now become a role model on the global stage in case of food security.

DHAKA – Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina told Parliament today that the country’s food security is protected despite the ongoing global crisis.

The premier said this in reply to a query by ruling Awami League MP Md Shahiduzzaman Sarkar from Naogaon-2.

The question-answer session was tabled with Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair.

In her scripted answer, PM said Bangladesh has already attained food autarky. The government has been working intensively to maintain the self-sufficiency in food.

Hasina, also leader of the House said the crisis was created in the global supply chain of different commodities including foods due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and following the Covid-19 pandemic.

She went on saying “amid this situation, the government has regularly been taking various steps on national and international levels to ensure food security.”

Hasina, the ruling Awami League president said Bangladesh has now become a role model on the global stage in case of food security.

She said the country’s food grains production was 328.96 lakh metric tonnes in 2008-09 fiscal year, which went up to 477.68 lakh metric tonnes in 2022-23 fiscal year.
