TANGAIL – Today marks the 144th birth anniversary of Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani, a legendary politician and dreamer of independent Bangladesh.
Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University, Bhasani’s family and various social and political organisations will be placing wreaths at the grave of the great leader at Santosh in Tangail.
Besides, doa and milad mahfil will be held at the central mosque of the university after the Zohr prayers.
Born at Dhangara village in Sirajganj in 1880, Bhasani was the founder president of the Awami Muslim League, which afterwards became Awami League. He later formed a left-leaning political organisation called the National Awami Party (NAP).
He played a leading role in the 1969 mass uprising and also led the historic Farakka March in 1976 to ensure Bangladesh’s right to a fair share of the Ganges river waters.
Bhasani’s relentless work for the common people earned him the title Mazlum Jana Neta (leader of the oppressed). He passed away on November 17, 1976.
