Bhutan recognised as ‘Destination of the Year – Earthly Experiences’ at ITB

THIMPHU – Bhutan received international recognition at the global travel trade show ITB Berlin in Germany, yesterday where the country was named “Destination of the Year – Earthly Experiences” for its commitment to authentic and regenerative tourism.

According to the Department of Tourism, the award recognises Bhutan’s efforts in promoting meaningful travel experiences that connect visitors with nature, culture, and the country’s values-driven tourism philosophy.

The recognition highlights Bhutan’s approach to tourism, where nature is considered a partner rather than simply a backdrop for travel experiences, reinforcing the country’s reputation as a global leader in purposeful and regenerative tourism.

Director of the Department of Tourism, Damcho Rinzin, received the PATWA Gold Award, Ecological Tourism (Himalayan Region) in promoting Bhutan as a model destination for ecological and sustainable travel.

The awards were presented by the Pacific Area Travel Writers Association (PATWA) during the annual travel trade event in Berlin.

The PATWA International Travel Awards recognise governments, destinations, organisations, and individuals for excellence in promoting tourism across sectors such as aviation, hospitality, tour operations, and destination management.

According to the Department of Tourism, this marks the second time Bhutan has been honoured at the PATWA International Travel Awards, reaffirming the country’s leadership in responsible tourism and sustainable destination management.

PATWA is an international non-profit media organisation founded in 1999 to support sustainable development in global tourism, hospitality, aviation, and related sectors. The organisation works in line with the principles of bodies such as UNESCO, the United Nations, and UN Tourism.

Speaking after receiving the award, the Director of DoT, Damcho Rinzin said the recognition reflects Bhutan’s commitment to sustainable tourism and the responsibility to protect the country’s cultural and natural heritage.

He added that as global travellers increasingly seek authentic and purpose-driven experiences, Bhutan will continue to uphold high standards of sustainability while offering immersive travel experiences aligned with national values.

Besides Bhutan, PATWA also recognised governments, organisations, brands, and tourism leaders from around the world for their contributions to the promotion and development of tourism.
