Bhutan’s new bodybuilding and fitness champions

Thinley Wangkay Dorji said that winning the competition is a dream come true and a testament to his years of hard work, discipline, and passion. In the women’s model physique category, Kinzang Deki emerged victorious, marking her third appearance at the national competition.

THIMPHU – In a remarkable comeback, Thinley Wangkay Dorji, 32, clinched the title of Mr. Bhutan at the 13th National Bodybuilding and Fitness Championship on October 13.

Thinley Wangkay Dorji was taking part in the national bodybuilding competition after a nine-year hiatus.

He won in the Open Men’s Bodybuilding category, earning his first Mr Bhutan title. He was followed by Mahalal Rai in second place and Sonam Phuntsho in third.

Thinley Wangkay Dorji said that winning the competition is a dream come true and a testament to his years of hard work, discipline, and passion.

“Every early morning, every intense workout, and every sacrifice led to this moment, and I couldn’t be prouder. This victory is not just a personal achievement; it’s a reminder that with dedication and the right mindset, anything is possible,” he said.

As the newly crowned Mr. Bhutan, he will represent the country at the 15th World Bodybuilding Championships, set to take place from November 5 to 11 in the Maldives.

The world championship will host over 500 athletes and officials from 55 countries.

With the world championship approaching, Thinley Wangkay Dorji is determined to continue his hard work and dedication to bring home a medal again after seven long years.

Thinley Wangkay Dorji works as a civil servant at the Department of Livestock. He has been into bodybuilding since 2011.

His impressive track record includes winning a gold medal at the Asian Championships in 2016 and another gold at the World Championship in 2017.

In the women’s model physique category, Kinzang Deki emerged victorious, marking her third appearance at the national competition. Since starting her bodybuilding journey in 2021, she initially pursued fitness but was inspired by friends and family to compete.

“I am happy that I could win the women’s category after three years of constant training. Bodybuilding is challenging as one has to sacrifice time and energy. I will keep working hard,” she said.

In the men’s sports physique category, Sumit Rai, a gym trainer, claimed first place. “Around 11 years of hard work has paid off. I am very glad. I have been trying for this title for three years,”

The championship featured a total of 25 participants, including nine women.
