PHNOM PENH – Cambodia and Thailand will implement the second stage of the first phase of the removal of heavy and destructive weapons and equipment on November 8, after both sides successfully carried out their first stage of the removal early this month.
The removal of heavy and destructive weapons and equipment is in line with an action plan signed by Lieutenant General Pov Heng, the Commander of Cambodia’s Military Region 4, and Major General Virakyuth Raksing, the Commander of Thailand’s Second Army, on October 31.
“Both parties had successfully carried out the first stage of the removal of heavy and destructive weapons and equipment in phase 1, under the observation and verification of the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT) on November 1. Cambodia will continue to work closely with Thailand to ensure that this action plan is fully and effectively implemented with accuracy and transparency,” said Maly Socheata, spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defence.
Military Region 4 of Cambodia and the Second Army Area of Thailand held a special meeting of the Cambodia-Thailand Regional Border Committee (RBC) on October 31, during which both parties agreed upon a concrete plan for the phased removal of heavy and destructive weapons and equipment under the observation and verification of the AOT, with the joint objective of de-escalating military tension.
The first phase of the heavy weapons removal is set to be carried out in three stages, starting from November 1 to November 21.
