KUALA LUMPUR – A much-awaited peace deal between Cambodia and Thailand was officially signed today, October 26, in Malaysia, marking a major step towards de-escalation after the recent deadly border clashes. The historic agreement was witnessed by US President Donald Trump and ASEAN chairman Anwar Ibrahim, who holds the rotating ASEAN chairmanship for 2025.
The accord was formally inked at midday by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and his Thai counterpart, Anutin Charnvirakul, on the sidelines of the ASEAN summit.
“We are signing the Kulua Lumpur Accords, it’s a good name,” said Trump.
He also announced that the deal will lead to the immediate release of the 18 Cambodian soldiers who have been held in Thai custody since their July 29 capture, a day after a ceasefire came into effect.
Anwar praised Trump for his intervention in the conflict, suggesting he had saved thousands of lives.
The two neighbouring kingdoms were embroiled in deadly border clashes from July 24-28, primarily over lingering border disputes which stem from the French colonial era. The conflict ended at midnight on July 28, with both countries agreeing to a ceasefire, following direct phone calls from President Trump to their respective prime ministers, as well as the facilitation of the ASEAN chair.
Speaking at the signing event, officials highlighted the agreement’s core focus: de-escalating tensions at the border, and a return to normalcy in relations between the two sides.
Manet thanked Trump for his support for peace, as well as Anwar, for his efforts.
“Cambodia is strongly committed to fully and faithfully implementing this joint declaration. We will continue to work closely with Thailand and all our partners to ensure that this peace endures and bring tangible benefits to our people,” he said.
Anutin noted that after the signing, he expected heavy weapons to be withdrawn from the border, and that Thailand will begin the process of repatriating the captured Cambodian soldiers.
