PHNOM PENH – Cambodia kicks off two regional meetings on science, technology and innovation (STI), in Siem Reap province this week, to strengthen regional collaboration and advance the implementation of the ASEAN Plan of Action on STI (APASTI) 2016-2025 and draft the action plan for 2026-2035.

The 20th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on STI (AMMSTI-20) and the 85th Meeting of the ASEAN Committee on STI (COSTI-85) are being held from June 3-7, along with related assemblies, according to a press release.

The 60th Meeting of the ASEAN Sub-Committee on Science and Technology Infrastructure and Resources Development (SCIRD-60) and the 16th Board of Advisory Council Meeting started on June 3.

“We are honoured to host AMMSTI-20, ASEAN COSTI-85 and related meetings as they serve as important platforms for regional collaboration in science and technology,” said Keo Socheat, National Institute of Science, Technology and Innovation (NISTI).

“As the host, Cambodia is committed to advancing ASEAN’s scientific capabilities and fostering innovation for sustainable development,” he added.

APASTI is a roadmap that aims to strengthen STI cooperation in the ASEAN region. It underscores key action areas such as enhancing research and development capacities, promoting technology transfer and innovation, improving science and technology education and fostering partnerships with the private sector, according to the release.

“The ultimate goal of APASTI is to harness the potential of STI to drive sustainable economic growth and development in the region,” it said.

Also to be included during the weeklong meetings are the dialogue among partners on cooperation projects, as well as presentations on related topics such as the Experts Group on Metrology, the ASEAN Young Scientists Network and the ASEAN Network on Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) Economy.

In addition to delegates from the 10 ASEAN member states and the ASEAN Secretariat, Timor-Leste also participates as an observer to discuss critical issues and advancements in STI infrastructure and resource development for the region.

Prime Minister Hun Manet is expected to deliver an address at the June 7 opening of AMMSTI-20.
