PHNOM PENH – The “Long-term Strategy for Carbon Neutrality in Cambodia” was presented to relevant officials on February 11. It is expected that the strategy will contribute to the increase of gross domestic product by nearly three per cent and can create 449,000 jobs in 2050.

“The reforms in the forestry sector, the reduction of carbon dioxide in the transportation sector, the drive for agricultural production and low carbon products will lead to progress in a green economy with sustainability for all,” said Ministry of Environment spokesman Neth Pheaktra during a press conference at the ministry on February 11.

Pheaktra said Cambodia kicked off the year 2022 by being the first country in ASEAN to launch the Strategy for Carbon Neutrality 2050.

He said Cambodia had also submitted a roadmap called ‘Long-term Strategy for Carbon Neutrality (LTS4CN) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) on December 31 last year.

The submission of the roadmap was to honour the commitment made by the Cambodian government during the 2021 UN Climate Change Conference in November in Glasgow to reduce greenhouse gas by 40 per cent in 2030.
