Cambodia PM chides Malaysian diplomat over Myanmar remarks

Hun Sen also said the trip had directly and indirectly achieved some tangible results, listing “a halt to violence” and “an extended ceasefire”.

Myanmar has been in turmoil since Feb 1, 2021, when the military declared a one-year state of emergency.

Both sides agreed that the crisis could not be resolved immediately and that a solution to the conflict must be led by Myanmar itself.

Cambodia has also received a request to hold an informal meeting of Asean defence ministers and those of Russia and Japan.

Hun Sen made the request during his meeting with Asean Secretary-General Lim Jock Hoi at the Peace Palace in Phnom Penh on Jan 17.

Singaporean PM Lee Hsien Loong expressed his support during a meeting with Cambodia PM Hun Sen via videoconference on Jan 14.

The disagreement over Myanmar emerged following Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen’s visit to Naypyidaw early this year.

Hun Sen reiterated that his visit to Myanmar was to press for a prolonged ceasefire in the country and the equitable distribution of aid.

Foreign minister Prak Sokhonn said that restoring Asean would require sorting out Myanmar’s issues with representation at its meetings.
