Calls for new Covid-19 pet quarantine measures in Hong Kong

Campaigners have praised regulations that allow animals to be isolated with their owners and are now calling for further regulations.

Bangladesh reported its first two cases of Omicron on December 9. The number has now gone up to 30.

Experts have attributed the relatively low increase in infections to the fact that 86.6 percent of Indonesians have immunity against Covid-19.

Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin has assured that Indonesia currently had sufficient vaccine stock to administer booster shots.

PM Fumio Kishida said 18 million doses of the Moderna vaccine had been ordered so the rollout schedule for the general public could be expedited.

However, he did not rule out the possibility of taking stricter measures such as halting movement in and out of the country.

The statement comes after a microbiologist said that Omicron could become the “nature’s vaccine” to protect the public against COVID-19.

At present, the Delta variant is still the most common lineage in the country, comprising about 43 percent of detections.

The experts said there could be a need to update the existing vaccines to better target emerging variants, like Omicron.

The findings re-emphasise the importance of short-range Covid transmission.
