TOKYO – ChatGPT ‘passed’ the entrance exams for the University of Tokyo with the top score, according to the experiment conducted by the Tokyo based AI company LifePrompt Inc.

The company used the latest model of ChatGPT to complete the Common Test for University Admissions and the University of Tokyo’s own entrance exams for humanities and science, all of which were conducted this spring. The teachers from Kawaijuku Educational Institution, a major prep school for university entrance exams, evaluated part of the answers that were in written form.

Out of 550 points possible, ChatGPT scored 503 for science and 452 for humanities. It scored 50 points above the highest-scoring human test takers, who passed the actual exam for the university’s Science III program, which is considered the toughest to pass in Japan. The highest scores earned by human test takers were 453 points for science III and 434 points for humanities III, both of which ChatGPT exceeded.

Notably, ChatGPT marked a perfect score of 120 points in mathematics for science majors, making a remarkable improvement from 38 points it had in the previous experiment last year.

“It is astounding to see the speed of AI evolution. Last year, ChatGPT did not even reach within the range of passing the exams, but it took only two years to achieve the top score, and it exceeded the points earned by human test takers who passed with the highest scores,” said an official of the company.
