China Daily bags 10 prizes in leading News Awards

Continuing its 12-year winning streak, China Daily Hong Kong Edition has scooped up a total 105 awards at the Hong Kong News Awards.

China Daily Hong Kong – Edition won 10 prizes, including three top ones, across eight categories on Friday at this year’s Hong Kong News Awards, one of the city’s most prestigious news awards events.

I attribute my achievement largely to the mentorship, cultivation, and opportunities offered by China Daily Hong Kong. China Daily has given me a baptism by fire, the one-of-a-kind institutional learning, practicing and honing skills, and acknowledgment of my endeavors and flairs.

Continuing its 12-year winning streak, China Daily Hong Kong Edition has scooped up a total 105 awards at the Hong Kong News Awards, including 11 in 2021, nine in 2020, 12 in 2019, and 14 in 2018.

China Daily senior reporter Jenny Wang Yuke was China Daily’s biggest winner this year, taking home four awards in four categories.

Wang won the top prize in Best Business News Writing (English) with her story Embracing a Sustainable World, which delved into the sustainable-fashion market that was trending when people got back to the basics after the pandemic.

Wang also won first runner-up in Best News Writing (English) for her story WHO: No Health Without Mental Health; first runner-up in Best News Reporting for her Family Disruption series; and the second runner-up in Best Science News Reporting for the wholesome health series.

Reporter Chen Zimo landed her personal best — the top prize in Best News Writing (English) award — with her story titled Hitting the Target on Mars, centering on the efforts made by a Hong Kong research team in the national Mars exploration program to help the nation achieve deep-space exploration.

Sally Zhou Mo, the deputy editor of Business News, said she was delighted to see that financial news is receiving more and more attention as China’s economic status keeps rising. As a financial journalist, Zhou sees it as her duty to provide readers with accurate, comprehensive, and objective news reports, hoping to expose wrongdoings and contribute to finance development

This was Chen’s first journalism award since she entered the field in 2018. Chen said that she was excited to attend the ceremony, believing it was an event for the industry to cherish as it boosted morale among journalists, who appreciated each other’s efforts.

Sally Zhou Mo, the deputy editor of Business News, won second runner-up in Best Business News Writing (English) with a story titled Borrowing at Your Peril, focusing on the hidden problems and risks of online lending.

Zhou said she was delighted to see that financial news is receiving more and more attention as China’s economic status keeps rising. As a financial journalist, Zhou sees it as her duty to provide readers with accurate, comprehensive, and objective news reports, hoping to expose wrongdoings and contribute to finance development.

Senior journalist Madeleine Fitzpatrick was the Best Headline (English) winner, and Zeng Xinlan was named second runner-up in the Best Young Reporter award. The veteran page-designer team of Mok Kwok-cheong and Billy Wong Siukay won two merits in Best News Page Design in the single-page and series-page categories.

China Daily’s data journalism team has taken nine titles since its establishment in 2016, which includes two top prizes and three first-runner-up awards. This year is also the first time that a data journalism story or stories — Wang’s Family Disruption series — won first runner-up in Best News Reporting.

Wang’s Family Disruption series report looked at the city’s families hard-hit by the pandemic, showing how children and their families have been affected and how they reacted when the drawn-out pandemic threw a curveball to all the families in Hong Kong.

“Data journalism is about exploring a pressing issue by sourcing and mining data, crunching and dissecting data, and analyzing and communicating data in the form of reporting and storytelling. It’s the signature product of China Daily Hong Kong,” Wang said.
