PHNOM PENH – Chinese ambassador to Cambodia Wang Wenbin has described Beijing’s “just and fair” role in helping Cambodia and Thailand reach a ceasefire, following recent border clashes.

Wang noted on October 11 that Chinese-led diplomacy — including a trilateral meeting in Yunnan province, China, and multiple peace missions by a Chinese envoy — helped bring both sides to the table.

“The foreign ministers of China, Cambodia and Thailand reached an outcome in China’s Anning, Yunnan Province; the three countries held an informal consultation; and the Chinese Foreign Ministry’s Special Envoy for Asian Affairs made several shuttle-diplomacy trips for peace between the two sides,” said Wang.

“Relevant parties have spoken highly of China for playing an irreplaceable role,” he added.

He reiterated that China supports both countries in resolving disputes through dialogue and backs Malaysia, as ASEAN chair, in pursuing a political settlement “through the ASEAN Way”.

Rejecting Western criticism, Wang stressed that China’s defence cooperation with ASEAN nations, including Cambodia and Thailand, is “normal” and that attempts to “sow discord” will not succeed.

“Individual Western media outlets have tried to use such cooperation to sow discord between China and relevant country. Such attempts will never succeed,” he said.
